Ei guys!

A friend much involved in the local music scene thinks the opera "Eugene Onegin" might be really great! Go see it at the CCP on Gala Night Sep28 Thurs or Sept 29-30 Fri&Sat, (don't worry it's a payday weekend).

For those of you who are interested in knowing more about the story line of the opera itself, read the URL http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugene_Onegin_(opera)

This is a good excuse to do something for the first time, dress up, hear music you're not even the slightest bit familiar with and paint the town red...Ü See you there, then!

MORE: Below is what columnist Pablo Tariman had to say about the opera in the Philippine Daily Inquirer's September 4, 2006 issue.

"Manila excited over ‘Eugene Onegin"

CLEARLY, THE MOST AWAITed opera event of the year is Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin,” which will be staged by the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music on Sept. 29-30.

In the distant past, Manila was the musical field of Verdi (“La Traviata”), Puccini (“La Boheme” and “Madama Butterfly”) and Donizetti (“Lucia di Lammermoor” in the late ’40s and ’50s and “Rigoletto” in the late ’90s).

CCP staged a magical Mozart (“Magic Flute”), courtesy of Sarah Caldwell, in the early ’80s, and an all-Filipino “Marriage of Figaro” shortly after.

In the early ’90s, Rolando Tinio staged Filipino versions of “Traviata” and “Boheme,” which the young enjoyed—to the horror of opera purists.

Mozart made a not-so-auspicious comeback with “Don Giovanni” in 2000.

But has Manila heard of Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin”?

Some years back, there was a Broadway version of the Tchaikovsky opera in a small theater. But it was in a small theater with just a piano for accompaniment.

This month, “Eugene Onegin” moves to the CCP Main Theater with a formidable cast, mostly products of the UST Conservatory of Music. The title role will be alternately sung by baritones Andrew Fernando and Noel Azcona with Tatyana to be sung by sopranos Rachelle Gerodias and Thea Perez.

Tenors Ronan Ferrer and Randy Gilongo alternate as Lensky. Clarissa Ocampo and Rexceluz Evangelista will sing the role of Olga.

The UST Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Hermie Ranera will accompany the singers while Floy Quintos directs.

“Onegin” is just one of the projects initiated by Raul Sunico, dean of the UST Conservatory. Before him, the deanship was held by such illustrious names as Julio Esteban Anguita, Bernardino Custodio, National Artist Antonino Buenaventura, Sergio Esmilla Jr., Benjamin Tupaz, Stella Goldenberg Brimo.

Clearly Sunico believes our opera talents need constant vehicles in which they can evolve as artists and performers.

UST is behind Sunico’s project.

If you didn’t know it yet, UST will turn 400 years old by 2011, and “Eugene Onegin” is just one of the highlights of the coming UST quadricentennial celebration.
