There's a whole story behind these pictures and this second Pulag climb for me. I've already written it in a open letter, though, which you can read here in my Multiply blog "WILDMIND". Check out my February blog entry entitled "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED: TEXTBOOK DELIVERY FOR ABUCOT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL".

I'll also bow to EJ Gamboa (another budding young Pinoy writer) and quote his sentiments about Mt. Pulag here:

"So this is where it all begins. Three thousand meters above sea level, on the summit of Mt. Pulag...The clouds begin to disperse and flow past us in lithe succession, finally granting us consent to gaze at the sunrise that signaled the start of a new day. The sun burns a brilliant white hue, framed perfectly by the blue of the open sky. I've never seen the sun shine this intensely, yet for some reason I'm not blinded by the light...The clouds continue to part, slowly baring the entire landscape. And for the first time since I set foot on this mountain, I see how vast it really is...The grasslands alone stretch as far as the eye can see. Threadlike lines twist and turn across the green expanse, cutting through the forests, hills and valleys before disappearing in the shadow of the summit. Every single one of those trails leads to where I stand...Pride overcomes me...So this is where it all begins." (Taken from his book "Passages", an anthology of his creative works so far.)

I hope you enjoy your virtual "climb" of Mt. Pulag in Kabayan, Benguet through my pictures. And when you do go up there yourself or on any other mountain, please remember to "take only pictures, leave only footprints". Hike and trek with care, folks, thanks! Ü

sadly, no, i had to buy a lightweight coleman tent for my friend corky as replacement for the tent with the lost poles. sana nga pang-matagalan 'yung tent na 'yun, noh, around P2000 each kami ng friend ko para mabili 'yon (buti na lang naawa siya sa 'kin, diba, nakipag-split sa cost!). Ü

'ngats and enjoy na lang in your future climbs and outdoor adventures, roy! ;)

hehe, thank you so much, donna! Ü yup, it really WAS cool, literally and figuratively. ;)

when i got back home early monday morning from that weekend Pulag climb, i remember really being overwhelmed and humbled by the entire experience of (you put it so succinctly) "sharing a part of myself with other people". Ü the pictures sat untouched in my PC for quite a long time before I could finally let myself savor the experience again with some distance and a little more wisdom gained from just living.

i know YOU'LL get to do that something special you've always wanted to do and when you do, i will be here to celebrate it with you! Ü

Yup, it really was awe-inspiring, Renz. Ü

I think it was in Pulag when the realization that mountaineers are also very spiritual people really sank in: To hike up a grueling mountain trail and risk life and limb just to see the sun floating in a sea of clouds, a vista that only God or The Supreme Being can make, is absolutely insane! But we mountaineers/ mountaineering enthusiasts do it anyway --- we climb summits to commune with Her/Him and see Her/His hand in Everything. ;)

yup, sobrang ganda ng Pulag, amie! Ü samahan kita when time and budget permit us to travel together to Pulag with a good mountaineering group (Mo is interested in climbing Pulag too, btw!).

I keep these Pulag pictures of mine "on display" on my homepage mainly to remind myself that though I lead a very ordinary life, I have been blessed with special moments like these (I think we ALL are blessed with those, hehe...it's just a matter of holding on to that experience or making it a part of ourselves or our daily lives).
